Cindy Grayson: News

May 1, 2017 - May 1, 2017

Hello May! Creepy trolls are still trying to use my guestbook even though I supposedly turned it off. I will try to scan it each time I come here and save relevant ones but anything not directed to me will be deleted! This month, I have my gig at the Manhattan in Lufkin, Tx. every Friday evening at the Manhattan. I'll also be at Liberty Bell in downtown Nacogdoches, Tx. on the 14th and 28th from 12:00 to 2:00 . One the 13th and the 27th I'll be at the Farmers market in Nacogdoches. I've also agreed to play from 11:30 to 12:30 on the 6th for a mini spring fest at Liberty Bell. Should be fun.

Farmers Market in Nacogdoches, Tx. - April 29, 2017

Wonderful adventure at the local farmers market today. With a new person at the helm of the heartbeat of the place, the vendor numbers are increasing and the variety of things to buy and see are increasing as well. It was a gray and windy morning with the threat of a storm moving in but I loaded up my PA and headed on in to play. It was windy and they'd already lost in canopy by the time I got there so I decided that I'd set up without a canopy because the clouds were so thick that I wasn't worried about getting a sunburn.
I was greeted again and again by people with their arms full of treasures and one small boy that I remembered from last Saturday, came and stopped in front and watched me very intently so I did the Unicorn sing for him and he broke out in a big grin and started dancing. During almost every song, the wind would pick up and I'd watch the vendors hanging on to their canopies as the clouds boiled overhead and the tree leaves and branches danced wildly in the wind. Around 10:30 several wanderers came and sat on the parking lot in front of me and made themselves at home with their food and dogs and I sang all the songs that I knew fit the atmosphere of market and windy weather. About 11:00 am I felt the first light touch of mist in my face so I finished my song , ( Jim Croche- Lovers Cross) and thanked everyone for letting me play and started packing up my PA just before the rain moved in. I did quit in time to talk to the venders and mingle a bit and came away with a passenger seat full of squash, Swiss chard, potatoes , sugar snap peas, fresh eggs, onions, tomatoes ,goat milk soaps , organic toothpaste and creamed and chocolate honey samples. I'd say it was a good day. Oh yes! And about $36 in tips. Yes, it was a good day!

Excuse my guestbook trolls - April 28, 2017

I have been having a hard time with guestbook trolls. Someone has been piggybacking my guestbook and using it for their own website and even though I've turned it off, they still seem to manage to tap into it and use it so I guess I'll have to go and delete everything on it daily. My apologese ( can't spell) for deleting the several nice comments I seem to have erased but checking each unwanted post individually was getting very time consuming. I appreciate everyone who does stop by and checks out my site. Thank you.

February news - February 11, 2017

Ok, I'll try this again! These touch screens drive me nuts! I just erased a whole paragraph by accidentally touching the screen with another part of my hand.
I'm still at The Manhatten in Lufkin, Texas every Friday evening.loading and unloading different equipment is what I enjoy the least I think but I'm getting use to it. I had to use my whole PA this morning at the market and then I'm playing on the sidewalk downtown for the Wine Swirl in downtown Nacogdoches this evening so I had to unload all the equipment from this morning, except for what I need for this evening and then I finally got a shower.
Tuesday is valentines Day so I'll be back at the Manhattan Tuesday evening to start by 6 pm.
I was playing at the market this morning and a couple I know who are both musicians came and sat for a song and said they would love to get together and work up some protest songs. Being members of the local Democrates we can put out talents to good use and I can imagine that between all of us, we can come up with quite a list. It sounds like fun. Well, I'm off to drink a glass of wine and relax before I have to get ready for this evening

Hello January 2017 - January 4, 2017

Well, things change. It's cold so my Saturday's at the farmers market have been cut back. I still play every Friday evening at the Manhattan Fine Dining Restaurant in Lufkin Texas and now I play three Sunday's in a row and one off at Liberty Bell in Nacogdoches , Texas. Kati Kennedy offered me every Sunday but I'd like to have at least one weekend at home to catch up on things. I'll start with this Sunday in January. Sunday's are from 12:00 to 2:00 and if I feel like it, I can play until 3:00.

Change in weekend performances - December 23, 2016

The Liberty Wine Bar in Nacogdoches will be closed for the next two Sunday's so I will not be playing until the Sunday after next. I will keep you posted.

Happy Holidays - December 22, 2016

It's been a crazy year and 2017 will be a real haunted house for a majority of the people in our country but one of the things that will help us is our music so I will continue to play at every chance I get and those of you who can bless us it's your presence as audience members, may the music touch your hearts as well. That being said, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I will be playing this Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM at the Manhattan Fine Dining room and I will be playing all the Christmas songs I know! That evening, the owner , Destin Sabani , is going to give a free speghetti dinner to anyone one of our poor and hungry who stop in and can't afford dinner. Hey, their food is great so it'll be a real treat for anyone getting one of those plates.

Sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 2:00 PM I will be playing Acoustic Brunch at Liberty Bell Wine Bar and Restaurant. I'll play Christmas songs if requested but I'm pretty flexible and I really have been playing Christmas music all month.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year too.

Happy Thanksgiving - November 26, 2016

It's been a stuffed turkey day and I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving last Thursday. Today is Small Business Saturday and it's also Wassail Festival time here in Nacogdoches, Texas. From 11:00 AM till 3:00 PM today, come and stroll the sidewalks downtown in Nacogdoches and visit the shops and taste the wassail from each shop and join in the socialization and vote on who dos it best. I'll be at The Heart of Texas and we've won 5 years in a row. I'll be helping behind the counter and I'll also be playing background music from inside the shop.
Happy Wassail Day!

It's November already? - November 2, 2016

It's November and it's still 80+ degrees here in East Texas. If anyone has any spare rainstorms you don't need or want, send them our way. We are extremely dry and my catfish are in danger of needing to learn to walk.
Things are going well. I'm looking forward to Friday evening at the Manhattan in Lufkin , Texas. I had to remake the poster I hang between the elevators. Fingernails have been dragged across the times I sing often enough that it's almost unreadable.i have noticed that since I put an added note at the bottom of the poster reminding the customers to not to forget to tip the waitstaff and entertainer because we're there to make sure they have a good evening, that most will read that and turn around and at least put a dollar or two or more in the jar.
Everyone have a wonderful weekend coming up and be safe!

October madness - October 15, 2016

This my third month to make my entire living with my music and art. It's got me running ragged. This is my busy weekend. I started out opening up the gift shop yesterday at 10:00 and I took off early to go to a dress rehearsal for a wedding I'm playing for today. The first two hours is up to me. Talk about being nervous. If I don't come in on time, I'll screw it up. Oh boy! I have my fingers crossed. I am suppose to be teaching a gourd carving class at 1:00 but I moved it up to 12:00 and I'll have to leave the house by 2:30 so I can get out there and figure out what equipment goes where with the guy who's going to take over the music at 6:00. I play from 4:00 to 6:00 while all the ceremony is going on. I've been nervous all week but then, I'm sure the young couple getting married have been nervous longer. I just haven't done a wedding recently and I don't want to screw it up.
Tomorrow, Sunday , I play from 12:00 to 2:00 at the Liberty Bell wine bar and I know that venue so I'm not worried about that but I'm hoping that on Monday, I can at least put gas in my car and pay my electric bill. I might have to stock up on candles : )

Busy August - August 21, 2016

Boy, this music schedule is keeping me on my toes. I'm still at The Manhattan in Lufkin every Friday evening and every other Sunday from 12 noon to 2:00 pm at The Liberty Bell Wine Bar in downtown Nacogdoches. Today being one of those Sundays. It's also the 3rd year anniversary of the Liberty Bell being in business so they've been celebrating all weekend. I don't go in to town unless I have to work or shop. Lately, I've been playing music with some friends who are more use to playing Virginia Dance reels but I know enough variety that we have been blending well. Their names are Drew and Sue Wenner and yesterday Sue texted me and said that our Democratic representative / Teacher , Steve Wright, wanted to have a get together to talk to people and bribe them with pizza. He also wanted us to come play in the background...for free. Of course I piled my guitar, my German shepherd in the car and played with them for about an hour but I had to leave early to come back home to teach a gourd carving class.
I'm also going to go play music with an old friend of mine, DP Schultz, on the 3rd of Sept. so he'll be coming over this next week sometime to go over some possible songs. He said he can't pay much but I'll probably get about $25 out of it and a chance to spend time with an old friend.

Crazy music schedule! - August 12, 2016

This month is the first month I'm truly having to pay my bills with just my art and music and my two day a week joe in The Heart of Texas gift gallery in downtown Nacogdoches, Texas. Keep your fingers crossed and check out my blog for a more detailed account of what I'm up to. I've never been able to figure out the difference between a Blog and a News/Journal. It seems that I would end up repeating myself and have to spend a lot more time on the computer instead of doing my art and music. I spend more time on Facebook and keep getting reminders to stop in here. It would be wonderful to have someone who took care of all that for me but again.......it would cost money so hang in there with me. : )

June 2016 - June 28, 2016

I have been totally out of the music performing world for about two and a half weeks now. There was a bug with head congestion and a spar attic low grade short lived fever, sinus drainage and a cough which I chose to ignore and keep on doing my gigs and 3 Sunday's ago , I woke up with no voice above a whisper. I knew I was pushing it but since I have never really had to depend on my voice before as an income producer, I did exactly what I shouldn't have done. Last Thursday, I finally got my talking voice to start coming back but the talking voice and the singing voice are very much two different things . Needless to say, I'm at home drinking hot ginger tea with honey and lemon. I would add tumerac but I don't have any so I added whiskey. It gives it a nice kick! I'm also gargling with hot salt water and , as the Dr. said, NO SINGING! Keep your fingers crossed and hope it comes back by Friday because I plan on keeping my playing gig at the Manhattan Fine Dining Restaurant in Lufkin, Tx.
I'll keep you posted.

May Flowers and Music - May 16, 2016

Well, I've been busier than a cat in a sandbox and have been trying to reduce my time with technology because I believe it rots my brain and is a big factor in my weight problems even though I've had people say it's just my age. Ha! I don't believe it!
Since my finances shrank last July i have been aware that if I don't get a grip on being self employed, I'll likely have to give up my music and art almost totally and go flip burgers or become a sales person somewhere. Yuck! Well, they're about to shrink again in July and I will be depending totally on my art and music for income - oh aside from my 2 days a week at a very cool tourist gift gallery known as The Heart Of Texas. You can find it on Facebook.I spent 25 years doing landscaping but after my recent removal of a basil cell carcinoma in the middle of my forehead, I think I'll stick to my own 42 acres and adjust my time to late evening and early morning and avoid the sun.
My music schedule is one that I'm beginning to adjust to. At first I would panic at having to pack my equipment in my car differently for each place I'm playing but it's getting easier. On Friday evenings I play from 6:30 to 10:00 pm at the Manhattan Fine Dining Restaurant. That only requires a small amount of equipment since I leave some of what I need there. Very often now, I get a call from the Farmers Market organizer to play there. I have been told I'm the favorite entertainer there. That requires my entire PA because the PA they have doesn't work well and is heavy and a pain. Mine is a lot lighter and more portable and it gets as loud as I need to be. last Saturday, I had one of the venders come and give my a whole bundle of fresh asparagus to play his favorite song" The Cat Came Back", so I did! Then I play every other Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at The Liberty Bell Wine Bar and Music Venue in Downtown Nacogdoches and I'm beginning to have a following. I have a wedding in October to play for. Other than that, I'm picking up production in my art studio, joined the Nacogdoches Art League, found a good place to have my pen and pencil art custom framed by a guy who is also connected to the Cole Art Center so that's opening doors for me. I'm making an effort to try and learn about the advertising end of making a living with my talents which is something I've never spent much time on. You probably guessed that from how few times I get around to posting news on here. I also have a Cindy Grayson site for music on Facebook as well as a Wilderhill Art Creations site for my art. I checked my email the other day and saw a post about an Art League meeting and eagerly went to write it up on my calendar only to see that I had missed it by a week. Obviously I don't check my email very often either. I will attempt to remedy that and keep you updated more frequently.

This morning, I am loaded up with equipment to go play at the Magnolia Court Assisted Living Center from 11:00 am to 12:00. Then I'm off to the next town to get a piece of art work scanned and copied to my flash drive. I'm getting this crazy art/music life style to make progress but it keeps me on my toes. We'll find out, come July, whether I can support myself or not. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Learn something new - March 24, 2016

I think I'll stick to my News/Journal for awhile. I had to turn the comment section of my Blog off. People seem to be piggybacking my blog to talk to each other and sell things. This is my site. I sell my music and talk about me.
Well, things are moving along. Friday evening I will be playing at the Pineknot Music performance here in Nacogdoches at Millard's Crossing at the little church. I'll be the opening set for the evening just before The Gospel Project. I've been trying to create a set list that I intend to stick to. I'll practice it while I at work tomorrow and maybe I can do most of it without a prompter. I play at 8:00 pm and I don't want to clash with their style but I don't want to do religious stuff. I've got eight hours of material so I think I made a good choice.
Saturday morning I will be playing at the Farmers Market from 9-12. Hopefully the weather will be great and the public will be in a tipping frame of mind. I don't know what they think we live on.
Monday I'm suppose to play at the Magnolia Court Assisted Living Facility but my Mom has a Dr. Appointment at 10:15 and you know how Dr's are. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

March Blossoms in harmoney - March 7, 2016

I'm enjoying being back at The Manhattan every Friday evening from 6:30 to 10:00 pm and now I also play at The Liberty Bell Wine Bar and Restaurant every other Sunday from 12 - 2 for Acoustic Brunch. I would say I'd like to play every Sunday but having every other Sunday off will give me time to try and keep up with my yard.
This last weekend was the 4 day Music Festival here in Nacogdoches, Thanks in a large part to Kati Kennedy who owns the Liberty Bell. She did all the booking and organizing and we had four days of a wide variety of music. My sons wanted to know when I was scheduled to play but I didn't get put in the line up. I think I need to go into town more often and join in the afternoon musicians who gather at The Old Mercantile shop at 2 every Saturday and learn more of their list of songs. It was a fun weekend.
Next month on April 2, its time for the Spring Fling at the farmers Market and I have a 9:00 am set in the childrens' section so Ill be brushing up on my childrens' songs.March, however , is the month when we drag out all the Celtic music we have and smooth out all the wrinkles because there are going to be many a St. Patrick's Day party to go to. I feel that I probably ought to go buy myself an appropriate shirt for these lively gatherings.
Well, i'll keep you posted and in the meantime, I'll try to get a better grasp on advertising my art and music. It's either that or get a job flipping burgers or selling clothes - or whatever. I think I'd like to find someone who plays really good lead guitar and some harmony and bass. if we double times the rythm, maybe we could make them dance , or at least laugh!

Gigs picking up - February 20, 2016

I never thought that I would actually be having to make a living with my music and art.
I'm enjoying playing back at the Manhattan Fine Dining restaurant in Lufkin every Friday evening and I'm also enjoying playing every other Sunday at the Liberty Bell Wine Bar and Restaurant here in Nacogdoches, Texas. I still work at the Heart of Texas gift Gallery two days a week and enjoy the wide variety of people I get to meet from all over the world.
This evening, they are having a Wine Swirl in down town Nacogdoches. That's where they sell tickets for people to walk around down town from 6 to 10 pm walking in and out of the different shops where local wineries show off their product and the store owners provide little snacks so you can snack and drink while you stroll around the stores and visit with everyone. Out on the sidewalks, in various places, are musicians playing music. I happen to be one of them. I'll play a 6 to 8 slot on the sidewalk right next to the shop where I work during the week.
Monday I'll play at Magnolia Court for an hour, 11 am to 12:00 noon. My Mom always sits on the front row. I think she likes it.

Happy New Year 2016 - January 1, 2016

This year is going to be a blast, I can tell! There's a chill in the air and there's a scent of music in the wind. I'm loving being back at The Manhattan on Friday evenings in Lufkin, every other Sunday at Liberty Bell in down town Nacogdoches and every chance I get at the local Farmers Market here in Nacogdoches. It's been a wonderful holiday and I'm exhausted but I'll fill in more of the details tomorrow. Sweet dreams!

News in the rain! - November 17, 2015

Storm warning out here in the Piney Woods and my dogs are all clingy. Poor things.
I did well at the Farmers Market last Saturday, I had a good set at the Liberty Bell in down town Nacogdoches last Sunday but I learned that I need to show up an hour early and bring my own PA. It would be so nice if my power amp had the same kind of plugs that their speakers had but it doesn't so I'll have to bring my own sound because I don't project that well and depending on their sound system to not be missing bits and pieces is not working. I also need to small monitors and a small stool for my tip jar. I'm learning as I go.
Yesterday I played folk music at Magnolia Court and although we only had 5 people last month, this month we had about 11 so it's getting better.
I've decided to write all the songs I do into spiral notebooks with all the chords and chord charts and key notes in case my iPad crashes or locks up again. I had notebooks but they get really heavy and spirals are light weight. It will just take some time.
Well, I now have some business cards and we'll see how they effect my gigs. I'm having to learn about advertising and promotion now that my entire income is depending on my art and music. As much as I hate the business end, it's either learn it or get a job at Walmart or Krogers or fast food or something that would bore me to death. Keep your fingers crossed.

Morning music - November 14, 2015

I having my morning coffee and getting ready to go play at the market. Last night at the Manhattan was good but slow. It still amazes me how people pay incredible amounts of money for going out and having someone serve them food and enjoy the atmosphere of a nice Resturaunt and walk right by the entertainer smiling and saying how much they enjoyed the music and walk right past the tip jar. If each person would put even just $1 in the jar, it would add enough to the minimal amount they get paid by the Resturaunt to play. We are working to! If they had their daily paid cut to what we make per gig ( since we're not famous enough but we love our music) they'd be shocked.
Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox.
I put my PA and everything in the back of my jeep and I'm dressed for the chilly morning so as soon as I finish my coffee, I'm headed to the Farmers Market to play for masses. Let's hope they don't try to put up their PA that has speaker and wiring problems. It's nice and sunny and , if the weather keeps getting colder, might be one of the last times I get to play until spring.

Happy November 2015 - November 12, 2015

Here in our protective bubble, we have managed to avoid a lot of the awful weather most of the rest of the United States has been getting. There is always something to be thankful for. I did have to sell the car I was so proud of and was 2 years away from paying it off but- again- I am thankful that I have my Moms car here and since she doesn't drive anymore, I still have a car to drive and now I don't have a car note to pay every month.
Music has been picking up. I am very happy to have my job at the Manhattan restaurant in Lufkin , Texas back. I am very blessed that the owner, Destin Sabani , held it for me the year I took off deal with my Dads death and removing my adopted child to a facility that could deal with her multiple disorders. I also now have been given a gig every other Sunday at the local wine bar downtown, the Liberty Bell. I play the Acoustic Brunch from 12 noon until 2:00 pm. I also play once a month at the Magnolia Court Assisted Living facility here in Nacogdoches where my mother has an apartment. I play the third Monday of the month from 11:00 to 12 noon and they have me on the schedule as Folk Music with Cindy Grayson.
I have also got an agreement with Buckley Macanerny ( sp?) that I will play at the Farmers Market any time he doesn't have any music on the schedule and I'm trying to get him to use some of the money in the market account to buy a small, compact PA like I bought for myself to keep at the market. The old one they've got now has wiring problems and is piece that were all donated at various times and has enough wiring problems that the speakers keep going off while your playing and they are also very heavy and it takes a couple of people to help set it up each time. I have taken to bringing mine but considering its my personal system and they don't pay me for the use of it, I may have to make it to one of the board meetings for the market and request a usage fee be paid to me for the use of my equipment if they aren't going to acquire a decent one of their own for the market. Of course, having my income drop by $3000 a month so my entire income is all from my music and my art and my part time job at The Heart Of Texas Gift Gallery in downtown Nacogdoches is bringing my cost of living to the forefront of my mind a lot.
Well, the summer is gone and there is a definite chill in the air so aside from my outside performances at the market, I'm glad the rest of my gigs are inside and so far I am managing to pay my bills through my music and art. I'm producing more pen and pencil artwork and have finished several gourds and finish a coloring book of all the statues here in Nacogdoches in an attempt to teach kids about the people in the history of the town they live in or are visiting. I just have to get it printed out ( one of my projects today) and then I've been asked to do a coloring book of the local Millard's Crossing Historical Village. I can create all day but finding a place that can reproduce my creations in a professional quality is proving to be a real challenge.
Well, I'll get back here later and keep you updated on a more frequent basis, hopefully. To keep a journal or blog, you have to make frequent entries and I haven't been very good at it but I'll keep at it.
Have a Blessed Day!

Upcoming Fall Fling news - August 19, 2015

I got a call from Buckley, the head honcho at our farmers market, and he reminded me that the Fall Fling is coming up on September the 19th. This year, instead of me starting up the show in the main parking lot at 8:00 am, I'll be starting up the festivities in the park next to the farmers market where the children's activities take place. I'll play for about an hour until the next act is ready to start. Then at 11:00 I'll head over to the PA in the main parking lot where Charlie Jones and Jon Hall will be finishing up their hour and a half and I'll take over where they leave off. The set before them, which starts at 8:00 am is Miki Lynn and I'm sorry I'll have to miss her set because she's really very good. Actually, they all are. There is an amazing amount of talent in this town. So the morning will be filled with music and festivities for Al ages until shortly after lunch. If you're anywhere near Nacogdoches on September 19th, stop on by the farmers market just east of downtown and join in the fun.

August heat! - August 18, 2015

It's been a wet year up until about a month ago and the Texas heat set in. This summer wasn't really bad because I got my house in order and now only have my dogs to argue with. I still have my job at the Heart of Texas Tourist shop and I went back to playing music at The Manhattan Fine Dining Restaurant in Lufkin and now I'll be playing once or twice a month at the Magnolia Court Assisted Living Facility here in town where my Mother is staying. I told them at the local Farmers Market that I'd play any time they have an opening but I'm still on the prowl for another part time job There's a reason they refer to us as Starving Musicians! :).
This last weekend I drove up to N. Little Rock and played with the Rackensack Folklore Society in their yearly music extravaganza and had a wonderful time. I did, however, forget that they also dress to represent the era of the songs which are all suppose to be from 1940 and before. Well, mostly. As it was, I was the only female not wearing a skirt or dress representing the era of song. Next time I will do better but I did have a great time playing two songs with my brother, Clyde, who played his upright bass and sang harmony on the first song and melody on the second song. The MC announced that we were going to do two love songs - " Careless Love" and " Marrow Bones" which got a laugh out of the audience. The whole show has been downloaded to UTube if you care to check it out. It was a lot of fun.
Well, i know I dont add to this as often as I should but I'll do the best I can. Stay dry if you're flooding and stay cool if you're in a heat wave and I'll be back to let you know what's going on here soon.

Blueberry Festival coming up - June 9, 2015

Yes, my friends, it's that time of year again and the Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches is on with an added show on the 12th, the Friday evening will be awash with music at the Festival Park south of downtown with music on the stage from 5 until 10 pm. Saturday, there will be Blueberry pancakes served for all the early risers and hungry folk as well as lots of venders and live music all day. Incidentally, I will be one of the acts on the main stage from 12:15 until 1:15 PM. So, if you're in the area, stop in and have a wonderful time in downtown Nacogdoches at the Blueberry Festival, June 12th and 13th and ... we'll see you there!

Practicing - May 27, 2015

I'm not good at practicing but I'm getting to the point that I take my guitar to work, or at least my back pack guitar, so I can play at work. Gerry Ann, who owns the shop, and the customers like it . I'm thinking about becoming a sidewalk musician. It would be fun!
